Celebrate SMALL PRESS MONTH with John Leonard and New Press Publisher Andre Schiffrin

As part of the celebration of Small Press Month, acclaimed publisher Andre Schiffrin will appear at Manhattan's Small Press Center to discuss his new memoir, A POLITICAL EDUCATION (Melville House), in a public conversation hosted by former New York Times Book Review editor John Leonard.

Schiffrin was born the son of one of France's most esteemed publishers, in a world peopled by some of the day's leading writers and intellectuals, such as Andre Gide and Jean-Paul Sartre. But this world was torn apart when the Nazis marched into Paris on young Andr's fifth birthday.

Beginning with the family's dramatic escape to Casablanca-thanks to the help of the legendary Varian Fry-and eventually to New York, A POLITICAL EDUCATION, recounts the surprising twists and turns of a life that saw Schiffrin, despite his radically altered circumstances, become, himself, one of the world's most respected publishers.

The event will take place at 7:00 pm on Thursday, March 15 2007 at the Small Press Center, 20 West Forty-Fourth Street in Manhattan. Admission is free.
