Book Publishing Tips of the Day

Daily words of wisdom from Tami DePalma and other publishing industry experts. Throughout the month of May we'll feature tips on taking full advantage of the BookExpo America trade show. Today's Tip from DePalma: "Attract--Don't Bribe!"
MARKETING TIP OF THE DAY

THEME: MEDIA KIT DESIGN - "Attract - Don't Bribe!"

Good gimmicks hang around a newsroom as a reminder of you and your book. Is yours something someone would want to keep around? While gimmicks in a kit are a creative attention-grabber, they should NOT be seen as a bribe. Keep your gimmicks around or under a dollar. Clever is the key!

Making the Most of BookExpo America 2000 - Chicago, June 1-4

"Taste of Chicago on the 'CookBookExpo' Floor."

Highlighting an extremely popular book genre, CookBook Expo will tempt literary taste buds as prominent chefs will actually demonstrate and prepare some of their signature dishes right on the convention floor. A special Chef Demo Area, sponsored by the City of Chicago, will be set up on the BEA show floor next to the autographing area where attendees can gather to see the chefs in action, taste their recipes, as well as preview upcoming cookbooks. The chefs will also be in the autographing area for signings immediately following the demos.

Participating chefs at CookBook Expo:

Famous Chicago Chef Charlie Trotter brings his restaurant right to BEA with The Kitchen Sessions With Charlie Trotter, (nominated for two James Beard Awards). Kitchen Sessions... demystifies the professional techniques and tricks behind Trotter's show-stopping recipes, making them accessible for home cooks (Ten Speed Press Booth 721/821).

Jesse Ziff Cool, proprietor of Flea Street CafÈ in Menlo Park, California, and author, brings her expansive talents as an organic Gourmet chef to Your Organic Kitchen (Rodale Books, Booth 1315/1415).

Mr. Food "Mr. Food" Art Ginsburg shares his wonderful recipes - more than 175 in all-in The Best of Mr. Food (Oxmoor House/Leisure Arts - Booth 1813).

On Sunday morning and afternoon, Illinois Institute of Arts/Culinary Arts School Students are scheduled to do cooking demonstrations at CookBook Expo.
