Successful independent publishing depends on creating great books for a niche audience and getting them to buy your books. So, finding the right niche retailers is vital - if you can find a book club that specializes in your kind of books, take full advantage! Especially with the rise of literary sites like Goodreads and LibraryThing.com, many sites cover books of all kinds, and getting involved with these sites and becoming an active participant can help you promote your books. Social networking site Mashable.com offers a list of "50+ Sites for Book Lovers" with lots of suggestions.

Finding mail-order catalogs that might carry your books is much easier, and can be an excellent stream of steady income. The Catalogs.com website lists catalogs in 36 general subject categories including Gadgets & Guy Stuff and Swim, Sun & Fun. It's all about finding the specialty retailers that want to sell your books to their customers!
