Welcome to the Book Club

A good place to learn about book clubs is Book-Clubs-Resource.com, an online guide to book clubs and reading groups with a good collection of links and information. Can't find a book club that will sell your kind of books? Start your own! BookSprouts is a new site (still in beta) for helping you do just that. The goal of Booksprouts is to "do the hard and tedious parts for you so that you can get busy reading and discussing!" "Booksprouts introduces Book Choices to help book clubs agree on what to read. We automatically create and organize online discussion spaces for each book. And we help clubs manage their member lists and their club meetings." "Book clubs come in many shapes and forms. The reason they exist and the real raison d'etre of Booksprouts is that book clubs create and foster friendships, intellectual stimuli, and discoveries of books, of the world, and of oneself."

The actions on the list range from writing press releases and networking, to contacting Oprah and getting to know your bankís president. The underlying value of the list may be that it encourages you Ė the independent author and/or publisher Ė to focus on ACTION. As an independent author, self-publisher, or owner of a small publishing house, it all depends on YOU and your ability to GET THE JOB DONE. Self-promotion, guerilla marketing, and effective networking strategies are all vital elements of getting the BUZZ for yourself and your books that lead to SALES.

Each month we list one of John Kremerís Marketing Action suggestions, and elaborate a bit on why itís important and how to make each action happen effectively and efficiently. Prepare to TAKE ACTION, IMPROVE YOUR MARKETING, and SELL MORE BOOKS!

Book Marketing Action Tip #15:
ďContact 3 book clubs and contact 10 catalogs.Ē

"There are book clubs covering almost all subject ares, often more than one. Contact at least three. Let them know about your books. Also, there are more than 1200 catalogs that feature books. Take the time to let at least ten of them know about your books. For a list of these catalogs, check out the resources at http://www.bookmarket.com/19.htm"

Successful independent publishing depends on creating great books for a niche audience and getting them to buy your books. So, finding the right niche retailers is vital - if you can find a book club that specializes in your kind of books, take full advantage! Especially with the rise of literary sites like Goodreads and LibraryThing.com, many sites cover books of all kinds, and getting involved with these sites and becoming an active participant can help you promote your books. Social networking site Mashable.com offers a list of "50+ Sites for Book Lovers" with lots of suggestions.

Finding mail-order catalogs that might carry your books is much easier, and can be an excellent stream of steady income. The Catalogs.com website lists catalogs in 36 general subject categories including Gadgets & Guy Stuff and Swim, Sun & Fun. It's all about finding the specialty retailers that want to sell your books to their customers!
