National Poetry Month Poster Released

Each April, the Academy of American Poets creates and distributes—free of charge—over 150,000 copies of a new National Poetry Month poster to U.S. schools, libraries, bookstores, and community centers to help promote the month-long celebration and to increase poetry awareness. This year's poster features a line from newly appointed United States Poet Laureate Philip Levine, and was designed by acclaimed graphic designer Chin-Yee Lai.

On the selection of the poet for this year's poster, Tree Swenson, outgoing Executive Director of the Academy of American Poets, said, "Philip Levine was an obvious choice for the poster this year since he's our current U.S. Poet Laureate. But from a larger perspective, Levine's sense of 'What Work Is' strikes a profound chord at a time when people in this country are burdened with high unemployment rates. His poetry captures both the dreams and compromises of our lives, portraying the everyday struggles, the value of simple pleasures, and the rare occasions on which we find transcendence."
