2013 Audie Award Winners Announced
The Audio Publishers Association (APA) has announced the winners for its 2013 Audie Awards® competition, the only awards program in the United States devoted entirely to honoring audiobooks and spoken word entertainment. Winners were announced at the Audies Gala on May 30, 2013, at the New-York Historical Society in New York. Writer Daniel Handler, aka Lemony Snicket, the mega-bestselling author of A Series of Unfortunate Events, will emcee the event. “At long last I get to combine my two great loves: audiobooks and hogging the spotlight,” said Handler.
This year's Audiobook of the Year went to The End of the Affair, by Graham Greene and read by Colin Firth (Audible, Inc.)

Finalists were selected in 28 categories ranging from the various genres and narration, to production and packaging. From each group of category finalists, one winner is awarded. Some standout finalists are Bring Up the Bodies, by Hilary Mantel (Read by Simon Vance) in the Literary Fiction category; America Again, by Stephen Colbert (Read by Stephen Colbert and Cast) in the Humor category; and Love Is the Cure, by Elton John (Read by Elton John) in the Non-Fiction category. In the Sole Narration-Male and Solo Narration-Female categories, the star-studded list of finalists includes books narrated by Dustin Hoffman, Colin Firth, and Anne Hathaway. Actress and narrator Katherine Kellgren, who has won four Audies and narrated over 100 audiobooks, is nominated twice in the category.
In other audiobook news, the Audio Publishers Association has released the results from two concurrent studies of audiobook sales patterns and consumer behavior which revealed that that total net sales of audiobooks in 2011 were up from the previous year and that, in general, the audio format is thriving.
According to the sales survey, some of the growth in the sales can be attributed to a wider selection of titles available to audiobook fans: The total number of titles published in the audio format has doubled over the past seven years. The rise of the digital download is no doubt the biggest contributing factor in the growth of sales and the declining rate of returns. The study shows that for audiobooks, the digital download format has eclipsed the CD format with slightly more than 60% of all audiobooks sold today being digital. More children and young adults are listening, too: survey results show a 20% increase in the number of kids’ and YA audio titles sold in 2011.
According to another survey conducted by Bowker, audiobook listeners love the convenience and ease of the format, especially during car travel. In fact, the overwhelming majority of survey respondents said they listened primarily while in the car and choose audio for its portability. More than two-thirds of recent audiobook buyers described audiobooks as relaxing and a good way to multi-task, also stating that an audio performance makes some books more interesting than they would be in print.
Creative bundling of audiobooks with physical and e-books could be one avenue to adding new listeners. About one-third of consumer respondents said they might spend more on audiobooks in the future if they were bundled with another product like the hardcover, paperback or e-book of that same title.
