Just one month remains to enter the 2015 Illumination Book Awards, a contest that honors the year’s best books written and published with a Christian worldview. Authors and publishers have until the November 15th deadline to submit their most promising titles for the chance to win a gold, silver, or bronze medal and the distinction of the "award-winner" title.
If last year’s results show us anything, it is that award-winning Christian books can come from all types of publishers, large or small. While established Christian publishers such as Judson Press and Marquette University Press were recognized, many of the medalists came from non-traditional avenues. Publishing services companies like CreateSpace, Tate Publishing, and Outskirts Press did well against the competition, proving that self-publishers are more than capable of producing exemplary books and competing with traditional presses. The last several years have seen major changes and upheaval in the publishing industry, but the Illumination medalist list reflects an incredibly positive aspect of these changes: the many different perspectives given voice through new publishing models and services.
Despite the variety among the medalists, all have one crucial thing in common. These books provide readers with the tools to strengthen their faith. Whether they seek to explore and explain a debated biblical source, or inspire through a heart-wrenching but ultimately empowering memoir, or even incorporate spirituality into our everyday mundane routines, these authors and publishers are tackling the complexities of being a Christian today in admirable and creative ways. With so many Christian presses and self-publishers thriving, the 2015 medalist announcement is anyone’s game. However, given last year’s winners, it is sure to be another impressive array of books showcasing the talent and passion of the Christian publishing industry.
