The Anatomy of a Best-Selling Book

An Infographic

The idea that there are common threads running through bestselling books, beyond just a gripping plot, is certainly tantalizing. Are there commonalities in content, marketing, or design that can be identified across genres? If so, are they elements that can be harnessed by aspiring authors to increase the odds of their own book's success? These questions were considered by the folks over at The Expert Editor, who put together the following infographic on the subject.

As editors and book lovers, we’re interested in what factors determine a successful book.

For the infographic below, we researched factors like content, genre type, different publishing markets, and self-publishing vs traditional publishing, to see if we could find some interesting trends.

And we certainly did.

We found common threads in relation to the length of the book, the identity of the chief protagonist, and how writing styles have evolved. In addition, while romance books are clearly the most popular genre today in terms of total sales, more people have read a crime/thriller book over the last year than any other genre.

Not surprisingly, a budding author should try to publish in the US, whose book market was worth $27.98 billion in 2014. Six markets – the US, China, Germany, Japan, France and the UK – account for over 60% of global spending on books.

We’ve collated many more interesting facts about best-selling books and the trends behind them in the infographic below.
