Mother Jones Magazine Launches New Book Page
MOTHER JONES, the "magazine of investigation and ideas for independent thinkers," recently announced a new, affordable, advertising opportunity for book publishers. IN PRINT, A BOOKSELLERS MARKETPLACE will appear in the next issue (November/December).
Named after pioneer labor organizer Mary Harris Jones (1830-1930), and published by The Foundation for National Progress, a nonprofit organization founded in 1975 to educate and empower people through media, Mother Jones contains "provocative and unexpected articles that inform readers and inspire action toward positive social change."This is the first time the magazine will feature such a book page, especially created for small and independent publishers. Mother Jones reaches over 350,000 readers nationwide. According to 1999 MRI research: 94% of these readers are college educated, 96% purchase books, book reading is their #1 leisure activity and they spend a total of $24 Million a year on books.
The book page, In Print, will feature a dozen ads containing a color copy of the book cover, title, price, publisher information, website, telephone number and a 30 word description of the book. "Response has been great so far," said Mother Jones Account Executive Lori Wood. "It's very affordable (cost is $420 per ad) for this much exposure, and the page is filling up fast." Fulcrum, Prometheus, Square One and New Harbinger are some of the publishers scheduled to promote titles in the Nov/Dec issue.
Mother Jones also formed a partnership recently with the San Francisco Book Council. A fund-raiser for the 2001 Bay Area Book Festival will be held November 13th, in San Francisco. Jointly organized by Mother Jones and the SF Book Council, the evening is titled, "Independent Voices" and will feature authors Dorothy Alison and Alice Walker, among others.
