One of the nation's top Book Fairs for independent publishers, the Small Press Book Fair, will take place on the weekend of Saturday, March 24 (10am to 6pm) and Sunday, March 25 (11am to 5pm) at the Small Press Center in the landmark building of the General Society of Mechanics & Tradesmen in midtown Manhattan. Admission to the Fair is free. The Book Fair is one of the major events taking place during Small Press Month 2001, a nationwide promotion of small and independent publishers.

The Small Press Book Fair offers a lively and cost-effective way to sell books and promote a small press. During the Fair, there will be book-making and printing demonstrations, readings, the Readers & Writers Café and other special events. Each year a major figure in independent publishing will be honored at the Book Fair with the Poor Richard's Award, marking an individual's outstanding contribution to publishing. This year's recipient will be Bill Henderson, founder and publisher, of Pushcart Press which produces the distinguished Pushcart Prize, an annual anthology of the best short stories, poems and essays from small presses and literary magazines. Last year's Poor Richards award winner was Andre Schiffrin, founder of The New Press.

Each year, an accomplished author who started their writing career through small presses, is chosen to represent the spirit of small press publishing, Edith Wharton (1862-1937) has been selected as the Small Press Center's Author of the Year for 2001. Wharton self-published a book of poetry when she was eighteen years old. She went on to leave a formidable legacy of books and ranks as one of the most eloquent writers in American literature. Throughout the fair there will be a special Edith Wharton exhibit.
