Online enthusiast site Themestream, has announced that its user base has grown more than 1100% since October, bringing the total number of subscriptions to its free email newsletters to well over 1.5 million. The company also announced that over 40,000 contributing authors are taking advantage of the site's self-publishing capabilities and submitting an average of 35,000 new enthusiast articles each month, making Themestream one of the world's largest and most active producers of original content.

"Passing one and a half million subscriptions is a tremendous milestone, and we have our users to thank for much of our success," said Daniel McCarthy, president and chief executive officer of Themestream. "Our research shows that many of Themestream's new users were referred to the site by a friend or family member, so this type of viral endorsement has proven invaluable to us. We're grateful and flattered that people are enjoying the site enough to want to pass it on to others."

"The growing popularity of our newsletter service and the site's self-publishing capabilities really reinforce that there is strong, increasing demand for personal interest information among individuals who share a particular hobby, interest or passion. At a rate of well over one million unique visitors and fifteen million page views per month, Themestream has fully established itself as the Web's leading enthusiast resource, has attracted a loyal following of authors and consumers alike, and is poised for even more growth in the upcoming year."

Themestream's goal is to become the Internet's central source for articles, information and ideas related to consumers' personal interests. Currently, there are more than 300,000 articles available within the system. Since anyone is welcome to publish information, ideas or opinions to the site, content is always fresh and timely. For those who want information delivered directly to their email in-box, Themestream offers its free daily or weekly newsletter as an easy way to remain informed. Each newsletter is personalized according to a specific user's personal interests and preferences, with content originating from experts, publishers and other enthusiasts on more than 1,600 topics.

With over 40,000 contributors writing about more than 1,600 topics (such as travel, fitness, and home & garden), Themestream combines content from its open content management platform with branded content from other Web sites and publishers, and also sends free personalized email newsletters on each enthusiast topic to subscribers. Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, the private company was founded in 1999 by first-generation talent from Netscape and Excite, and received venture funding from Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers and Redpoint Ventures. Board members and advisors include William Hearst, Mike Homer, Maria Wilhelm and Tim Haley.

Some "connections" made at Themestream have lead to writers getting published:

Simon & Schuster publishes a series of books called "Chocolate for Women," edited by Kay Allenbaugh, similar to the CHICKEN SOUP series. One Themestream writer had an essay that was going to be in the series, and she recruited a number of her friends on Themestream to submit essays, too. In all, seven Themestream writers will have essays published in upcoming books within this series..

Roadman Press contacted Themestream because they are putting out a book about "Riding the Rails" and want to include stories about railroading that they saw on Themestream. Themestream was able to put them in touch with the authors they were interested in.

Adrian Drake, author of a new book series called "Hawkwind," approached Themestream author J.L. McKenzie about doing a review of his novel in pre-publication to raise awareness for the book. Drake is going to ask the book publisher to include excerpts from Mckenzie's review on the book's back jacket.
