BookExpo America Salutes the Authors

Themed autographing sessions highlight popular book categories; salute to mystery writers, independent publishers, and more
BookExpo America has announced several initiatives to underscore the important role of the author in daily convention activity. The annual book convention's new "Book & Author Salutes" program will feature themed autographing sessions as well as a special education seminar hosted by Mark Victor Hansen, co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. These programs supplement a stellar line up of author speakers at the traditional author breakfasts and at various luncheons, as well as a special evening benefit performance by noted jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, entitled, Jazz in the Bittersweet Blues of Life.

"The authors who attend BEA add luster and provide a defining edge to the daily activity at our convention," notes Greg Topalian, Show Director for BEA. "We want to recognize the importance of these authors, while providing incentives and programs that help them in their chosen profession."

A main feature of "Book & Author Salutes" will be the themed author autographing sessions which will take place throughout the day on Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2 and which will focus on authors in various genres at specific times of the day. Authors will be loosely grouped so that certain booksellers and other attendees may plan their day around meeting their favorite authors. Author categories for scheduled autographings include:
Celebration of Children's Books (June 1, 10:00 am)
Salute to Mystery Writers (June 1, 1:00 pm)
Salute to Women's Fiction (June 1, 3:00 pm)
BEA's Morning of Health & Wellness (June 2, 10:00 am)
Non-Fiction Features (June 2, 1:00 pm)
Salute to Independent Publishers (June 2, 3:00 pm)
Salute to Latin American Writers (June 2, 3:00 pm)

"Book & Author Salutes" will also present How to Create & Market a Mega-Bestseller on Friday, June 1, from 8:30am - 4:30pm. This all-day conference will be hosted by author and motivational speaker Mark Victor Hansen, and includes a team of industry professionals, discussing how to launch a bestseller. Mr. Hansen is the co-creator of Chicken Soup for the Soul series and he will discuss how to maintain the mind-set and motivation necessary to effectively market your book.

Joining Mr. Hansen will be literary agent Jillian Manus, who has offices in New York and San Francisco, who will help guide authors through the maze of the publishing industry to find the right agent; Robert Allen, noted author of Nothing Down, Creating Wealth, and Multiple Streams of Income, who will show authors how to package their books; and Rick Frishman, president of Planned Television Arts, the oldest and largest book publicity firm in the country, who will discuss how to properly promote your book to the mainstream media.

The BEA "Book & Author Salutes" is rounded out by the traditional author speeches and performances at the convention which will include breakfast, luncheon, and evening appearances by authors including Wynton Marsalis, Isabel Allende, Jack Welch, David McCullough, Vernon Jordan, David Halberstam, and many others.
