Southwest BookViews Will Debut in 2002
Review publication established to serve the steadily growing number of Southwestern publishers.
Southwest BookViews, a new quarterly review journal devoted to books from and about the Southwest region and their authors, will appear in January 2002. Published by the New Mexico Book Association and edited by seasoned Santa Fe critic and writer Candelora Versace, it will serve readers, librarians and collectors with reviews, articles and book news of the Southwest region. This is a successor publication to the recently "retired" New Mexico Book Talk, published by the New Mexico Book League since 1971. The New Mexico Book Association's directors believe it is important to continue with a Southwest review publication in light of the steadily growing number of Southwestern books published and the declining number of mainstream newspapers and periodicals that review books.
Southwest BookViews encourages publishers who are located in the Southwest, or whose books or authors have relevant connections to the Southwest to send their catalogs or their books for review consideration. ("Southwest" encompasses New Mexico, Arizona, southern Colorado, southern Utah, western Texas, Oklahoma and the Mexican frontera.)
New Mexico Book Talk has set an important standard that will be the guide as Southwest BookViews takes on the role of assuring that literary interests from this part of the country have a strong voice. Several of the respected Book Talk contributors have been invited to write and review for the new publication.
New Mexico Book Association was established in 1994 as a non-profit, networking and service organization of book professionals that includes publishers, writers, editors, designers, booksellers, librarians, agents, distributors, publicists and literacy advocates. NMBA's mission is to preserve, protect and promote the book in all its forms.
NMBA's board of directors has selected Candelora Versace as editor of Southwest BookViews because of her proven journalistic ability with the Santa Fe New Mexican and as editor of Libro, NMBA's monthly newsletter, as well as her vision for the development and success of Southwest BookViews.
