APA KICKS OFF FIFTH ANNUAL NATIONWIDE CAMPAIGN

JUNE IS AUDIOBOOK MONTH!!
It's spring again, and for the audiobook industry this means getting down to business. Indeed, the months of May and June mark the busiest time of the year for audiobook publishers, producers, narrators, and anyone connected with the industry. From the Audio Publishers Annual Conference (APAC) and Book Expo America (BEA), to the Audie Awards are some of the most highly anticipated of the year. The culmination is Audiobook Month, which will be celebrated in June 2002 for the fifth consecutive year. Dedicated to promoting and creating greater consumer awareness of audiobooks, June is Audiobook Month is a nationwide campaign coordinated by the APA, in cooperation with bookstores and libraries around the country.

This year, in addition to distributing samplers and posters nationwide, the APA is sponsoring two new features for June Is Audiobook Month. First, the APA is distributing special, travel-themed display kits to libraries and bookstores around the country to help promote this special month. The APA chose travel as this year's theme since so many people tend to travel during the summer, and audiobooks are an entertaining addition to any trip. The kit will include a specially designed box, shaped like a car, which will hold 2002 audiobook samplers which contain selected excerpts from popular audiobooks of every genre. The display kit will also include this year's winning June is Audiobook Month poster, designed by Laura Wolf of Los Angeles. The poster, which depicts the Coliseum and is inscribed with the slogan "Friends, Romans, Countrymen, Lend me Your Ears," uses bold, graphic images to catch the viewer's eye.

A Public Service Announcement campaign is the other new addition to June is Audiobook Month. These PSA's urge listeners to celebrate June Is Audiobook Month by patronizing their local libraries to pick up an audiobook. Twelve stars were chosen to narrate the PSA's. Among them are Jean Auel, LeVar Burton, Jackie Collins, Rosie Daley, Kenneth Davis, Linda Greenlaw, Quincy Jones, John Nance, Bill O'Reilly, Ridley Pearson, Jeanne Ray, and Neale Donald Walsh. The PSA's will be aired on local radio stations across the country and, along with the CD samplers, will be streamed on the APA's website, www.audiopub.org.

With this multi-faceted campaign, the audiobook industry is confident that that there will be a surge of audiobook sales and awareness.

The APA is a non-profit trade organization consisting of over 200 member companies including publishers, resellers, distributors, and suppliers along with other industries related to the production, promotion, and sale of audiobooks. The mandate of the APA is to deal with the concerns of the industry; assure the ongoing production of high quality products; to initiate research and the distribution of relevant data; and to nurture solid relationships among the consumer, the reseller, and the industry itself.
