Former President Bill Clinton will greet booksellers and book industry professionals on Thursday, June 3 and headline the event by presenting BEA's Opening Night Keynote Address at 6pm, where he will speak to an audience eager to hear his comments about his immensely anticipated memoir, My Life, to be published at the end of June. It will be President's Clinton's first appearance on behalf of the book. (Editor’s note: the man pictured above is not Bill Clinton; it is presidential hopeful George Carlin.)

“Buzz Forum” Panelists Are Announced: Top Editors Present Key “Sleeper” Titles

Panelists for the increasingly popular and widely attended annual “Editor & Bookseller Buzz Forum” will include: Michael Pietsch (Senior Vice President & Publisher, Little Brown & Company); Ann Godoff (President & Publisher, The Penguin Press); Anika Streitfeld (Fiction Editor, MacAdam/Cage Publishing); Judith Regan (President & Publisher, Regan Books); Dan Menaker (Senior Vice President & Editor-in-Chief, Random House); and David Rosenthal (Executive Vice President & Publisher, Simon & Schuster Trade Division).

The Buzz Forum allows top publishing industry executives to present the one or two upcoming books they feel most passionate about to a captive gathering of booksellers, book reviewers, and other media and industry professionals who annually attend the book convention. Introduced in 2002, it has rapidly become a popular addition to convention activity, garnering considerable attention and drawing a large audience in each of the two years it has taken place.

The executives who are selected to speak at the Buzz Forum are asked to talk for 10 minutes each, and they are encouraged to focus their attention on just one or two titles. It is also suggested that they discuss books that they might consider “sleepers”, those important hidden titles of literary merit, or breakout potential, which might otherwise go unnoticed. The panel is chaired by Nora Rawlinson, Editor-in-Chief of Publishers Weekly and is open to all BEA badge participants at no charge. It will take place on Thursday, June 3 at 4:30pm, Room S106 A/B.

COMICS GEORGE CARLIN, JON STEWART, JANEANE GAROFOLO AND DAVID SEDARIS HIGHLIGHT BEA SPECIAL EVENTS

The noted comedian, actor, and author, George Carlin, will entertain booksellers and book industry professionals in an exclusive solo comedic performance at BookExpo America on Saturday evening June 5, 2004 at the Navy Pier Grand Ballroom in Chicago. Mr. Carlin will be at BEA this year to promote his new book, WHEN WILL JESUS BRING THE PORK CHOPS? Proceeds from the Grammy award-winning comedian's special appearance will benefit the Book Industry Foundation, which is comprised of the American Booksellers Foundation For Free Expression (ABFFE) and the Association of American Publishers Get Caught Reading campaign.

BEA has also announced speakers for its special events. The celebrated Book & Author Breakfast program begins on Saturday, June 5 with talks by David Sedaris, Alexandra Fuller and Alexander McCall Smith. Terry Gross will be host for that morning’s festivities. On Sunday, June 6, Graydon Carter will host Jon Stewart, Gish Jen and Tom Wolfe in the breakfast venue.

In addition to the traditional early morning breakfast program, BEA will again offer the Saturday Book & Author Luncheon, which has become a popular mainstay of convention activity, and last year provided notable sparks, to say nothing of headlines, between Al Franken and Bill O’Reilly. For election year 2004, this year the luncheon panelists will include: Donna Brazile, Janeane Garofalo, P.J. O’Rourke, and Linda Chavez. Brian Lamb will moderate the proceedings. Rounding out the special events will be the Saturday Audiobook Tea featuring Augusten Burroughs, Kinky Friedman, Amy Tan and Scott Turow.
