Author Susan Isaacs chose The Sleeping Father by Matthew Sharpe (Soft Skull Press) as the next Today Book Club selection. The announcement was made on NBC's TODAY SHOW on Wednesday, February 25. Few independent press titles have been chosen for the club, especially few from "alternative" presses like Soft Skull.The "sleeping father" to a teenage son and daughter is Bernard Schwartz, who emerges from a coma with brain damage from a stroke precipitated by his ingestion of two incompatible antidepressant medications. The novel, which follows the children's efforts to rehabilitate their father, is described and excerpted on the MSNBC website, and calls it a "story [that] addresses the larger crisis in faith and authority in contemporary American life."
