Having more energy is important not only to make you feel better, but also to keep you healthier. Studies have shown that "recharging" -- whether through prayer, meditation, focused breathing, positive thinking, hobbies or other things that give us energy -- can promote faster healing, increased mental acuity, better emotional well-being and greater productivity.

Research also shows that stress -- which depletes our energy -- may increase our risk for many health problems, especially cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune illnesses. On the other hand, positive emotional energy can increase longevity and strengthen our resistance to unexpected distress.

Here is a simple way to get more energy starting today.

Explore New Territory

For many of us, part of the fun of a vacation is exploring someplace new. Getting away from the ordinary is energizing. When we are tired, we also may be tired of our environment and routine. So, for a mini-charge between vacations, consider doing something a little different.

  • If you usually drink coffee, try a special tea or hot chocolate.
  • If you normally skip lunch, stop and go out to eat.
  • Take a different route to work – the scenic route.
  • Listen to five minutes of music that’s not your usual choice.
  • Talk to someone you’ve never actually met, but pass by regularly.
  • Pick up a newspaper you seldom read, and read it from cover to cover.
  • Visit a different website or a new chat room.

    Exploring something new can be exhilarating. It’s the contrast to the norm that usually sparks our interest. You don’t have to wait for a vacation on an exotic island to recharge; just add a little “exotic” to your day.
