The 2004 Independent & Small Press Book Fair, December 4 & 5
The 17th annual Independent and Small Press Book Fair will be held Saturday, December 4th from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday, December 5th, from 11 am to 6 pm at the Small Press Center at 20 West 44th Street in New York City. This is a break from recent tradition, as previous Fairs have been held in March. The Fair will take place at the Small Press Center, located in the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen, a literary landmark building in midtown Manhattan. Drawing enthusiastic crowds of up to 3,000 each year, the Book Fair provides an opportunity to purchase diverse books and magazines by 200 independent publishers.The Fair's diverse line-up of exhibitors ranges from single-title self-publishers to heavy-hitters like Seven Stories Press and The Paris Review to avant garde outfits like Ugly Duckling Presse, and includes many other groundbreaking presses, including The Feminist Press, Verso Books, The New Press, and Akashic Books.
In addition to the holiday-shopping opportunity, the weekend is packed with a wide range of free public programs, including readings, discussions, panels, seminars, interviews, and exhibits, as well as a literary café. The programming for this year’s Fair is the most ambitious and diverse to date, and will feature:
The Book Fair is a cost-effective opportunity for independent presses to sell and promote their work. By holding the Fair on a prime weekend during the holiday season, the Center hopes to help increase sales and exposure for independent publishers and small presses.
