App of the Month: the Vook

WHAT IS A VOOK? According to Vook.com: "A vook is a new innovation in reading that blends a well-written book, high-quality video and the power of the Internet into a single, complete story. "You can read your book, watch videos that enhance the story and connect with authors and your friends through social media all on one screen, without switching between platforms. "Vooks are available in two formats: As a web-based application you can read on your computer and a mobile application for reading on the go. With the web-based application you don't have to download programs or install software. Just open your favorite browser and start reading and watching in an exciting new way. You can also download and install the mobile applications through the Apple iTunes store and sync them with your Apple mobile device." See a sample HERE. Check out a Valentine's Day Vook HERE.

This Month: End Your Customers' Google Addiction with MashLogic
As publishing becomes more digitized and Web-based, new tools are emerging to help online news sites keep people from leaving their pages to look up related topics on Google and Bing. These tools may well apply to the interactive ebooks of the future.

Menlo Park, CA-based company MashLogic has developed two useful tools, “2Stay” and “2Go,” designed to help online publishers give their readers the additional information they want -- while keeping them navigating within their own websites, and without consulting an outside search engine.

“Companies and news sites are interested in preserving their brands,” says John Bryan, VP of Business Development at MashLogic. “These new tools help you retain readers, generate page views and increase revenue.”

The aptly named “2Stay” tool allows the publisher to choose key terms on a webpage, and when a reader cursors over these terms, a branded box pops up, alerting the reader to relevant articles from elsewhere on the website. This gives site owners a way to help users navigate news on their sites without having to rely on search engines, which often turn up irrelevant information from untrusted sources. This keeps users on a site longer, allowing more chances for sales and building brand loyalty.

Bryan explains how the "2Stay" technology helps in three important ways: “First, it gives users an expanded experience at your website, encouraging them to spend more time and use more of your content. Second, it inspires more clicks and more page views, which can translate to more ad views and sales. Third, it can give additional life to older content, which is still valid but normally invisible.”

This concept can also be used elsewhere on the Web, with the MashLogic “2Go” feature, which allows your brand to stay active during your followers’ browsing activities at other websites. Once they’ve downloaded a button from your site, they’re never more than one click away, and can bounce back to you for related content.
