Indie Groundbreaking Book: Work Positive in a Negative World

Time is Money - and So is Attitude

In 2005, Independent Publisher interviewed author and speaker Dr. Joey Faucette about how listening to his customers led to his popular Listen to Life book series. Six years later (and several books later on Dr. Joey’s part), we’re talking to Dr. Joey about his upcoming book, Work Positive in a Negative World: Redefine Your Reality and Achieve Your Business Dreams (Entrepreneur Press, August 2011).

“One of the things the economy and the recession has done is put a lot of pressure on people, making them compartmentalize their lives into ‘work’ and ‘home,’” Dr. Joey explains. “The idea of a personal/professional dichotomy is artificial; each of us is one whole human being. Work Positive helps build people and employees who creatively and innovatively grasp opportunities. Everybody needs good personal skills. For me, personal and professional development go together.”

The book is geared toward executives, managers and sales professionals, although Dr. Joey insists everyone can benefit from reading it. “There is application for entrepreneurs and business people, either corporation leaders or small business owners,” he says. Work Positive in a Negative World gives a comprehensive overview of the challenges of the workplace, everything from focusing your mind to complementing coworkers to building strong team relationships with customers and employees.

How did Work Positive in a Negative World come about? “I followed the advice of my customers and clients,” Dr. Joey says. “Listening is key, and although I’m in the business of communication, knowing which words to speak and write makes all the difference. I listen and then I speak. What I continue to find is people stymied in their personal and professional lives. We are bombarded with media that is negative, especially about the recession. I started looking for the positive.” Dr. Joey based his book on personal experience, current successful practices and even made historical studies of business people such as Dale Carnegie and Napoleon Hill.

According to Dr. Joey, Work Positive has several ROIs for business people:
1. Increase productivity and lower employee turnover.
2. Achieve higher results through new solutions.
3. Coach teams to create collaborative relationships that broaden outcomes.

Although the book certainly focuses on looking on the bright side, Dr. Joey assures me he is not pushing a Pollyanna-perfect world. “Thinking positively is certainly a part of the method,” he says, “but we have to be realistic. Negativity does exist.”

The Work Positive philosophy is built around Dr. Joey’s five core principles: Perceive, Conceive, Believe, Achieve and Receive. He describes how each of these principles is integrated into the book.

Perceive is the mental dynamic of how you Work Positive; you focus and filter for the negative so you can be proactive. For example, in the publishing world, there is a lot of doom and gloom about the rise of e-books. However, people are still reading and some are reading more than ever. Some of my friends got an iPad for Christmas and they are reading now more in the past six months than they have in the past 5 years. It’s all about perception and perceiving positively.

Conceive is the social dynamic. In this section, I talk about how to deal with negative people, or what I call ‘Eeyore Vampires,’ without getting down.” Dr. Joey uses the gloomy donkey in conjunction with bloodsuckers to demonstrate how negative people can be on your mind at all hours of the day. “It would be okay if you could leave these people at work,” he explains, “but you can’t, and that’s when they become vampires. These negative people suck your time and energy away even when the work day is done.” Working with positive folks, on the other hand, can lead to much better results. “If two positive people are focused, 1 + 1 = 16. Positivity takes on an exponential life of its own.

Believe represents the emotional engagement with the positive,” Dr. Joey continues. “Imagination is the jet fuel here; suddenly your business takes off and not only do you become more successful but you also start bursting through ceilings that you didn’t even know existed.

Achieve is the physical dynamic, when stuff really starts to happen. The Achievement Prescription is Attention + Intention + Action = the Work Positive Lifestyle.

“And then you reach Receive, the ethical dynamic. This is when you learn to say thank you to those around you. Despite what you may think, you are not solo driver. One day you will realize you were in the carpool the whole time.”

Sold yet? Just like the Listen to Life series, Work Positive in a Negative World is the first of many to come. Dr. Joey says he is currently doing research and has an outline for a “Lead Positive” book and hopes to continue the theme with books focused on living, teaching, loving, parenting and even networking positively. We look forward to seeing more from Dr. Joey in the future.
